Why we built MergeBlitz

2048, four ways.

2048 is one of the great mobile puzzle ideas of the last decade. The problem is, after about a hundred runs, you’ve played the same map a hundred times. MergeBlitz is the merge puzzle we wished existed: same elegant core, four ways to play, including a hand-crafted Campaign that actually goes somewhere.

The 2048 ceiling

2048 launched in 2014 with a perfect mechanic. Swipe a 4×4 grid; tiles slide; matching values merge and double. Reach the 2048 tile to win. It went viral because everyone could grasp it in five seconds and nobody could put it down for a week.

Then we all hit the ceiling. Once you’ve made 2048 a few times, the game has nothing more to say to you. The board shape is fixed. The target is fixed. The clock doesn’t exist. There are no objectives beyond “number bigger.” You either set yourself a private goal (“reach 4096”) or you stop playing.

The mechanic deserves more. The mechanic is good enough that we wanted to keep playing it — just with more reasons to come back tomorrow than “I might get a higher score this time.”

Four modes, one mechanic

MergeBlitz keeps the slide-and-merge core unchanged and stacks four play modes on top of it:

  • Classic. The 2048 you know, with one upgrade: configurable target tiles. Going for 1024 is a different game than going for 8192. Pick your poison; per-target high scores are tracked separately so you can compare apples to apples.
  • Blitz. Same board, 60-second timer. Combo chains (back-to-back merges) buy you extra time. A great game for the bus, the elevator, the line at the coffee shop.
  • Daily. Same seeded board for every player every day. There’s exactly one Daily, you have one shot at it (kind of — you can replay if you want, but the leaderboard slot is your first try). Built-in conversation piece for group chats: “did anyone get the Daily today?”
  • Campaign. 35 hand-crafted levels across 7 worlds (Grasslands, Desert Dunes, Frozen Peaks, Volcano Core, Bomb Squad, The Gauntlet, Endgame). Each level has a specific goal — reach this tile, clear these obstacles, survive these many moves — and a 3-star rating based on how few moves you used. Worlds unlock as you collect stars.

The Campaign is what we’re proudest of. Designing 35 boards by hand, each with its own little puzzle, took longer than building everything else combined. Some are easy warmups. Some made us swear at our own game. We think you’ll find a couple that genuinely make you sit and think.

What MergeBlitz isn’t

You’ve seen this list before if you’ve read about BrainBlitz or AlchemyMix, but it’s the entire point of the studio:

  • No ads. Anywhere. Ever. There is no “watch a video to undo your last move” button because that button is what ruins puzzle games.
  • No loot boxes, no power-ups for sale. The undos and the hints are part of the design budget. You don’t buy your way through Campaign Level 28; you solve it.
  • No subscription. $0.99 once. The Campaign is the same Campaign for everyone.
  • Offline. Plays the same on a plane as in your kitchen.
  • Per-mode high scores, per-tier scores, per-day Daily history. All on your phone. None of it leaves.

The combo system

One thing we added that we haven’t seen anywhere else in the merge genre: combo chains. If you make multiple merges on a single swipe (e.g. four 2’s line up and become two 4’s, then immediately a 4 sits next to your existing 4 and merges to 8), the game registers it as a chain and gives you a score multiplier. In Blitz, chains also rebate seconds onto your clock.

This sounds like a small flourish, but it changes how you play. Setting up a 3- or 4-merge cascade is a different cognitive task than just preventing the board from filling. Once you start chasing chains, you stop swiping reflexively and start thinking three moves ahead. That’s the version of 2048 we wanted.
